SLEPT ON THE ROOF.

ROOFTOP · GOLDEN HOUR · ISTANBULFRAME 01

The hostel was full. The guy at the desk shrugged, pointed at the ceiling, and said the word that has started most of the good nights of my life: “roof?”

So — roof. A mattress dragged up a ladder, a city of minarets and satellite dishes going gold and then blue, ferry horns from the Bosphorus keeping a slow, irregular time.

Say yes first. Figure out the ladder later.

The geography of a detour

You learn a city differently from above it. Streets you’d never walk resolve into a pattern; the neighborhood argument two buildings over becomes theater. I fell asleep counting rooftop cats and woke up under a call to prayer with dew on the hoodie I’d used as a pillow.

Packing light is what made the yes possible. One bag means you can climb the ladder. Three garments, a notebook, nothing you’d cry over losing — everything else is just weight that keeps you off the roof.

Field note

Some of the best rooms don’t have walls. Day 009. Cleared.
